Caring For People By People Who Care

History of St. Fiacc's House

In the late seventies, a sum of £10,000 was bequeathed to the parish of Graiguecullen/Killeshin to support the older people. Fr. Sean Kelly was curate at that time here. He felt there was a need for a centre that would care for the older persons in the parish who, for various reasons, could not stay in their own homes but were too well for nursing homes. He came up with the concept of a supported care home, which would be a home from home. He put together a committee who supported his vision and they fundraised until they had the total finances needed to build the unit. That then became St. Fiacc's House.

The site is owned by the parish and has been leased long term to St. Fiacc's House free of charge. It opened its doors in 1982 to provide a home from home for 17 senior citizens of low dependency in our region. For 25 years, the house was run by the Sisters of the Mercy Order who were ably assisted by workers on a community employment scheme and up to 60 local volunteers. Since the sisters retired in 2006, the home has been managed as a limited company with charitable status and employs permanent and part-time staff with a considerable amount of the work still being carried out by Community employment workers and local volunteers.

The registered provider representative to represent St Fiacc’s House CLG since 2012 is Fr. John Dunphy PP. The services provided are 24/7 residential care, day care services for 5 days per week, and meals on wheels services for 7 days a week. St. Fiacc's House is legislated under HIQA, our centre registration number is 0554. We are part funded by the HSE CHO 5 and CHO8. We depend on the residents and service users fee's plus donations from the wider community.
